GYMNOS PHILOSOPHY
OUR PHILOSOPHY
PHILOSOPHY
We challenge those seeking a deeper knowing of themselves to step up, take on greater obstacles, and become the powerful men and women we were born to be. As we expand in our capacity as individuals, we can better serve our families, friends, and communities. We can change the world--but it must begin within ourselves.
Is now the time that you claim your power? Is now the moment that you cease wasting precious moments in fear, doubt, or insecurity?
Is today the day you embark on the journey into your greatest life?
"It is not that we have a short space of time, but that we waste much of it. Life is long enough, and it has been given in sufficiently generous measure to allow the accomplishment of the very greatest things if the whole of it is well invested."
- Seneca, On The Shortness of Life
ANCIENT WISDOM
SOCRATES
Socrates was a scholar, teacher and philosopher born in ancient Greece. His Socratic method laid the groundwork for Western systems of logic and philosophy. Socrates believed that philosophy should achieve practical results for the greater well-being of society. He attempted to establish an ethical system based on human reason rather than theological doctrine. You may know 2 of his most famous students - Plato & AristotleSocrates pointed out that human choice was motivated by the desire for happiness.
Ultimate wisdom comes from knowing oneself. The more a person knows, the greater his or her ability to reason and make choices that will bring true happiness. A stone mason by trade before becoming a philosopher, he emphasized that both the mind and body are equally important. Socrates was known for his fortitude in battle and his fearlessness, a trait that stayed with him throughout his life.
Strong and full of wisdom, Socrates once said, "It is a disgrace to grow old through sheer carelessness before seeing what manner of man you may become by developing your bodily strength and beauty to their highest limit."
ANCIENT WISDOM
PLATO
Plato was an Athenian philosopher in Ancient Greece. He was the Founder of the Academy, the first institution of higher learning in the Western World. Plato was an athlete, particularly skilled as a wrestler. The coach under whom he trained is said to have called him “Plato” — from the Greek for broad, platon, on account of his broad-shouldered frame.
He spoke strongly on behalf of the virtues of physical education. He felt that one should balance physical training with cultivating the mind.
“In order for man to succeed in life, God provided him with two means, education and physical activity. Not separately, one for the soul and the other for the body, but for the two together. With these means, man can attain perfection.”
